2021 KEGGY AWARD WINNERS

The KEGGY Awards were created in 2014 to recognize our partners for their commitment to sustainability by choosing reusable stainless steel kegs — a truly zero-waste package.

To date, more than 20 million bottles — and approximately 45 million pounds of waste —  have been diverted from the landfill through the use of Free Flow’s reusable stainless-steel kegs. Each Free Flow keg holds the equivalent of 26 bottles of wine and will save 1,560 bottles from the landfill over its lifetime. Overall, there is a 96% reduction in wine’s CO2 footprint when packaged in reusable steel kegs compared to a glass bottle!

On average only 39% of glass wine bottles get recycled. Many single-stream recycling programs (curbside recycling) have stopped collecting glass because glass contaminates the entire bin of recyclable materials when it breaks. That means all the contents of the bin are thrown into the landfill where it will take hundreds of years to decompose.

After a brief hiatus due to the COVID shutdowns in 2020, the KEGGY Awards are back to recognize our partners for the incredible impact their keg programs have had on reducing waste from the landfill.

This year’s Awards are arguably even more meaningful than in previous years: they not only represent the sustainable initiatives our partners prioritize but also represent the resilience and importance of the wine and hospitality industry within our local communities after a year of ongoing restaurant shutdowns.
